Torch-on membrane is the traditional heavy-duty answer to a flat roof: rolls of reinforced bituminous sheet bonded to the deck with a gas torch, lapped and sealed at every joint. It has been used on Maltese roofs for decades and remains a solid choice where a robust, thick, physically tough layer is wanted rather than a coating.
Compared with liquid systems it goes down faster over large open areas and gives a substantial membrane thickness immediately. The trade-off is the joints: every lap is a potential weak point if not properly sealed, and complex roofs with many pipes and upstands are harder to detail neatly in sheet than in liquid. Many roofs end up best served by torch-on across the field with liquid detailing at the awkward parts.
